Prevention Is Best Protection for Pet Heart Health
Now is a great time to take stock of your furry friends’ heart health. Avoid unnecessary heartache by preventing heartworm disease, a deadly condition that can damage your dog or cat’s heart or lungs.

Heartworm disease, a parasitic condition contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, is common among canines and felines in the United States. The disease can be difficult to treat and is sometimes fatal. The good news — heartworm disease is easy to prevent. Although dogs are natural hosts, cats also contract the disease.

When a disease is caused by something as simple as a bug bite, it seems the best protection is prevention. Some tips to lessen the risk for heartworm include:

  • Start a year-round preventive program to effectively keep pets free of heartworms.
  • Visit your veterinarian for your pet’s annual physical examination with complete history.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) also recommends year-round heartworm medication. Most treatments are easy to administer, safe when used as directed, and relatively inexpensive, especially compared to the cost and heartache of treating an infected pet.

Ask your veterinarian about monthly prevention options such as new Advantage Multi® (imidacloprid + moxidectin) Topical Solution from Bayer Animal Health. This treatment combines the proven-effective flea control of Advantage® with heartworm disease prevention, and it is effective at treating and controlling intestinal worms all in one, easy-to-use, monthly topical solution.
