Am I Pet-Parent Ready?

Thinking about adding a pet to your family? You already know this new addition will bring countless hours of fun and happiness. But, before you decide on that perfect companion, make sure you know what to expect.

If you are introducing pets into your household, remember to:

  • Remove any houseplants (even non-poisonous plants)
  • Remove any objects that may be dangerous to a pet - unstable shelves, things that could fall over if jumped on, etc.
  • Keep other pets out of the room for at least a few days
  • Place a carrier or crate in a private, quiet corner, with appropriate bedding (you may wish to use the carrier you bring your pet home in)

Your new pet is likely to have a personality all its own. And just like people, it’s important to make sure you choose the right pet for you and your family’s lifestyle. After all, choosing the right best friend for your family will lead to fun for years to come.

What to Expect

Becoming a pet parent will bring joys and challenges specific to your new pet’s age, breed and species.

When bringing a pet home remember the following things:

  • Animals are probably not house trained
  • They might be teething and want to chew
  • They will need preventive health care including vaccinations and parasite control, as prescribed by your veterinarian.
  • Close supervision is a must in the early weeks of new pets
  • New pets need habitual behavior to learn routines
  • Pets need you to be a source for unconditional love
