Using the Litter Box

Thursday, September 01, 2011

Perhaps the most important thing you’ll ever teach your cat.

Cats have a natural instinct for using a litter box, so refining those instincts to build good litter box habits is usually pretty easy. Here’s how.

  1. It’s recommended that you have at least two litter boxes in your house, plus one more for each cat that you have. Place the litter boxes in areas that are quiet, but easily accessible.
  2. As soon as you bring your new cat home, show her where her litter boxes are.
  3. Place your cat in one of the litter boxes a few times during the day at times when she’s likely to need to go, such as in the morning or after a nap, and after meals.

Most cats will get the hang of using a litter box fairly quick, but accidents happen. When they do, don’t punish your cat – she might get scared if she doesn’t understand that’s why she’s in trouble.

If your cat has more than a couple of accidents, go back to picking her up and putting her in the litter box when it’s time to go. Your cat should get with the program again.

Cats can be picky. If your cat consistently refuses to use the litter box even after repeated attempts to train her, try:

  • Changing the brand of litter
  • Moving the box to a quieter spot
  • Cleaning the box more frequently

Some cats may also stop using the litter box if they have a urinary infection. If the accidents persist, consult your veterinarian.
