Dog Travel: Tips For Traveling With Your Dog

Friday, August 26, 2011

You’re ready to get out of town for a little R & R, but you’re uncertain whether traveling with your dog in tow will provide either of those Rs. For the well-prepared dog owner, traveling with a pet is a fun and rewarding experience.

Preparing for a trip with your dog

If staying with friends at your destination, don’t assume your dog is welcome in their home. Ask your hosts if the dog may tag along, and if so, where he’ll be staying so you can better prepare. If pets are a no-no, consider finding a kennel in the area so you can still spend time with Fido while being respectful of your friends’ wishes.

If staying in a hotel, look online for hotels that allow pets. Hotels are putting out welcome mats for dogs and their owners more than ever.

If flying to your destination, check your airline’s Web site for regulations when traveling with a dog. Make any necessary arrangements in advance with the airline, including the fee for your dog, which can vary depending on the dog’s size and weight.

If driving, consider a safety harness for your dog if you don’t have one. Check online for parks en route for a game of fetch along the way.

Health preparations

Check with your veterinarian regarding any special considerations. Depending on where you’re headed, your dog may need deworming pills or additional vaccinations. For air travel, you’ll likely need a health certificate from your vet, as well.

Jot down the name and phone number of a veterinarian at your destination. Though you may never use this information, you’ll want to have it in case of an emergency.

Packing list for dog travel

Print out this list to ensure you don’t forget anything:

  • Medications
  • Food and water
  • Dog dishes
  • Toys
  • Pet bed, if needed
  • Collar and leash
  • ID tag with cell phone number
  • First aid kit
  • Plastic bags for waste
  • Name and phone number of area veterinarian
  • Health certificate

Things to remember while traveling

Now that you’re on your way, remember these key points for a carefree trip:

  • Clean up after your dog, wherever you are.
  • Be respectful of others’ property, be it at a hotel or at a friend’s home, especially if you want to be invited back!
  • Try to keep to your dog’s regular schedule as much possible in terms of mealtime, sleeping patterns, etc. This will make the trip smoother for you and your pet.
  • Have fun! This should be an enjoyable time for both of you.
