About Equine Osteoarthritis

Development of Equine Non-infectious Synovitis and Osteoarthritis

Every decision you make concerning the health and well-being of your horses affects not only their performance, but also their longevity. Nowhere is this more evident than in caring for equine joint injuries. Traumatic and Degenerative Equine Osteoarthritis are significant causes of poor performance and economic loss in athletic horses and ultimately may contribute to the premature retirement of injured horses. The key to successful long-term management of equine osteoarthritis and limitation of ongoing damage is early recognition of symptoms and prompt treatment of the disease.

Joint with Synovitis

Through training and competition, even the healthiest, most athletic horses become susceptible to joint inflammation. What starts as joint inflammation can quickly cascade into synovitis, and eventually osteoarthritis. Undetected or left untreated, synovitis can progress causing significant cartilage damage. Cartilage damage can be permanent and develop into osteoarthritis, impacting your horse's ability to compete. The goal of treatment is to normalize the inflamed joint by reducing inflammation.
